Purpose of visit

John Michael Boling came to the Netherlands in mid-January to work on the first episode of his anime series CULTURESPORT, created in partnership with Showroom MAMA, local makers and Het Nieuwe Instituut. The work premiered at Showroom MAMA on 22 January. A virtual installation – part of the 2016 International Festival Rotterdam’s Episodic/Epidemic programme – reveals its production process. CULTURESPORT is a metacritical anime series created entirely with the open-source 3D software Blender.
Under the auspices of the International Visitors Programme, Boling will visit destinations including Het Nieuwe Instituut on 27 and 28 January to get better acquainted with e-culture in the Netherlands.

John Michael Boling is an artist currently based in Athens, Georgia. In the past, he has served as associate director of Rhizome, an online new-media art organisation, and created the infamous 53o’s website. His work has been shown internationally at institutions including the New Museum in New York; MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts; and Galerie West in the Hague. For the last two years, he has been working on CULTURESPORT in secrecy in Georgia.
